During the 2021-2022 academic year, Alana Chandler ‘22 cooked up a storm to work on Tlaim: The Patchwork Cookbook. A project supported by Be’chol Lashon, the Tlaim cookbook aims to celebrate the racial and ethnic diversity within the Jewish community. The project pairs recipes with poems, stories, essays, and photographs from submitters so that it becomes more than just a cookbook but also a mosaic of experiences from various backgrounds. The stories shared will create a new way of connecting communities through the Jewish kitchen.

“The Jewish-Japanese recipes were created to add to a Jews of color cookbook to highlight other types of Jewish cuisine that have historically not been considered "authentic" because they do not fit the Jewish-European norm in the United States.

When Chandler applied for a Community Service Fund (CSF) grant, the cookbook was just starting to get underway, but the project’s ingredients have quickly come together. With the CSF funding, Chandler created a black sesame matcha babka and cinnamon mochi swirl challah recipe. The sweet treats were shared and enjoyed during a large potluck dinner during Senior Week.
